Gateway to Fiordland National Park, the township of Te Anau sits beside one of the most picturesque lakes in New Zealand. As you stand on the lakefront the bush-covered foothills draw your eye skywards to towering peaks, and it’s easy to understand why this area was chosen to portray the mountainous realms of Middle Earth. The second largest lake in New Zealand, Te Anau covers 43,200 ha and is over 417m in depth. Experience the spectacular sights of Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound and the Te Anau caves (containing glowworms).
The Waiau River, flowing from Te Anau to Lake Manapouri, was another alias of the river Anduin. This is where the Fellowship undertook the first part of their river journey before they reached the Brown Lands, the desolate and treeless area between Mirkwood and the Emyn Muil where long ago the Entwives made their gardens.
The Kepler Mountains located behind Emyn Muil is where the Dying Morasses w ere filmed, as was the o pening sequence of Ar wen’s escape with Frodo.
