Come and visit Middle-Earth
The three Lord of the Rings films were filmed throughout New Zealand’s varied scenery. Almost all the diverse landscapes appear in the film, the only exception being the many beautiful beaches.
After 438 days of filming the last scene was completed in December 2000. All three films had been filmed.
A year later, after 1700 crew from over 100 locations brought the world of Middle Earth to life, editing began.
Many of the scenes from the film were computer generated or digitally enhanced, and this was done in Wellington at Weta SFX. The Gates of Moria, for example, were generated here. It is however the first hand experience of being in t ouch with New Zealandīs beautiful nature that will leave you with a life long impression!
