Kapiti Coast and Hutt Valley
The River Anduin in the Fellowship of the Ring incorporated four different New Zealand rivers, the Rangitikei River near Taihape appearing first. A young river in geological terms, the Rangitikei has carved sheer cliff walls on its way to the Tasman Sea. Waitarere Forest is located south of Foxton on the Kapiti Coast, a popular summer holiday area for many Wellingtonians who come to relax at the many beaches along the coast.
Filming took place in various parts of the park, including Osgiliath Wood (where Frodo, Sam and Smeagol walked after leaving Faramir) Trollshaw Forest and scenes of Arwen walking through the trees.
On your way to Wellington, you will pass the villages of Upper and Lower Hutt and Featherston. Harcourt Park, in Upper Hutt was used as a setting for parts of Lorien and the arrival of Gandalf in the Gardens of Isengart.
Visit Kaitoke Regional Park 12km north of Upper Hutt to experience Rivendell, clearly signposted from the entrance to the park. At the location itself is an interpretive display showing the construction and final result. This is where set constructors built a large set, including the bedroom where Frodo recovered from his knife attack.
