Edoras
 You will head towards the South Island’s heart today, the Canterbury region. For eleven months, Edoras, the capital of Rohan was built and filmed here. Situated in a large mountain valley, the treeless golden tussock land of Erewhon, with its sharp shingle peaks providing a jagged backdrop, is a haunting image.
Described by Tolkien as similar to the Steppes of Russia or with the prairie lands of America with grass as far as the eye can see, Peter Jackson decided Central Otago was the closest match.
